Benefits Assistance Clients’ Urban Project (BACUP), a division of Special Service for Groups (SSG), is a mental health wellness center and benefits advocacy program. As a Los Angeles community resource since 1986, BACUP provides the tools and environment for participants to achieve health and wholeness. BACUP prides itself on offering services that are entirely run by individuals in recovery or who have recovered from mental illnesses.
BACUP was founded in 1986 for the purpose of improving mental health access to individuals unable to navigate the mental health system on their own by providing benefit representation and supportive case management.
The program was started at the grassroots level by community activists and leaders working to protect the rights and needs of people in recovery from mental illnesses throughout Los Angeles County. Today, BACUP still strives to meet the needs of people living with mental illness by providing comprehensive wellness services that embrace innovation.
The hallmark of BACUP is its Life Independence Future Empowerment (LIFE) Center. The LIFE Center provides activities that promote wellness, recovery, and self-sufficiency for adults in recovery from mental illnesses. The LIFE Center also provides resources for friends and family of loved ones living with mental illness, and community education about the promotion of mental health and wellness.
